BRASS TRAINING DAY

SUNDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2007

On Sunday 7th October 2007 the East Anglian Brass Band Association held its Annual Brass Training Day at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich. Eighty-two delegates (from aged ten upwards) had enrolled for this event. The course leader was Dr Nicholas Childs and sectional tutors were all members of the Black Dyke Band. Richard Marshall and Morven Gilchrist (cornets) and David Thornton (euphoniums and baritones) were making a return visit. For Julie Backhouse (flugels and tenor horns), Joseph Cook (basses and percussion) and Adrian Hirst (trombones) it was a first visit to the Association’s Brass Training Day.

Delegates had been looking forward to the event and with everyone present the course was able to start slightly earlier than scheduled. The music studied was the B B & C F March by J Ord Hume, Gaelforce by Peter Graham, Harmonious Blacksmith by Alan Fernie, Charivari by John Iveson and Paintings (commissioned by the Association for their 60th Spring Contest in 1998) by Derek Broadbent.

The day was very successful. Due to the enthusiasm of both tutors and delegates the lunch break and tea breaks were shorter than planned. Over one quarter of the delegates were under the age of seventeen with several between the age of ten and thirteen. Morven looked after the young third cornet players (it was their first time at such an event) and gave them a considerable amount of encouragement and help. They had such an enjoyable time that before they left the hall they asked if they could come again next year.

EABBA would like to thank Nick, David, Julie, Adrian, Joseph, Morven and Richard for an excellent course.

The East Anglian Brass Band Association is grateful to Norfolk County Council and John Jarrold Trust for their financial contribution to the event.
